Ray Stedman, noted pastor and Biblical expositor said, “Forgiveness, of course, is the virtue we most enjoy, and least employ, in our Christian experience. We all love to be forgiven – we expect it, and want it. But we find it a struggle to forgive; we resist it, and refuse oftentimes to do it.”

Corrie Ten Boom, a Christian woman who survived a Nazi concentration camp during the Holocaust, said, “Forgiveness is to set a prisoner free, and to realize the prisoner was you.”

Forgiveness is a foundational Bible truth. Why is forgiveness important? The best answer is because Jesus commanded us to forgive others. Scripture clearly communicates that if we don’t forgive, we won’t be forgiven: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6:14-16).

Many times we fail to teach children about the importance of forgiveness. Most kids don’t know about Jesus’ method to restore relationships. The Lord tells us in Matthew 18:15: “If your brother sins against you go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.”

When someone wrongs us, we often do the opposite of what Jesus commands. We turn away in hatred or resentment, seek revenge, or engage in gossip by going to others about the situation rather than following God’s commands. Instead, we should go to that person first, regardless how difficult that may be. Then we should forgive that person as often as he or she needs it (Matthew 18:21-22). This will create a healthy atmosphere for restoring relationships. We must follow God’s prescribed process if we desire to receive His fullest blessings.

Kids need forgiveness

(Isaiah 55:6-7; Psalm 103:10-12; Ephesians 4:31-32)

The Situation

Kids declare, “I’ll never forgive you for that!” They learn to hold grudges and to get revenge. This practice begins a downward spiral that leads to bitterness, bondage, and even health-related issues. But forgiveness leads to freedom. It is foundational to the Christian faith.

The Solution

Through Christ’s death, Christ followers are beneficiaries of God’s ultimate forgiveness. He has forgiven us thousands of times! God obligates His children to model His own unlimited capacity to forgive—even with people who are truly difficult. His example to us demands nothing less!

What You Can Do

Practice repentance and forgiveness. Teach your children that “repent” means to reverse directions, to turn away from one thing and to turn toward another. Repentance requires genuine sorrow for your sin against God. It includes an inward change of attitude and an outward change of action. Forgive one another as freely as God has forgiven you.

As we teach and model God’s forgiveness, be mindful of the words of Lehman Strauss, well-known Bible teacher and writer, “We cannot be right with God when we are wrong with others.”

Touching, tasting, smelling, hearing, and trying things out for themselves – we’re talking about Preschool Children. Three-to-five year old children are ready and willing to learn. They learn by experiencing and by doing. Unlike toddlers, preschoolers are more independent and because their language skills are improving, they can express their needs more frequently (and sometimes loudly!). Still, as testing as they can be at times, preschoolers have fears such as parent separation and being set into new places. They have incredible imaginations and often times have difficulty telling the difference between fantasy and reality. They need simple, but clear boundaries and rules.

Preschoolers learn by doing. Lots of activities are good, but as is true for all of us, they need a balanced diet of fun and quiet times. One of the keys to their social and emotional development is to praise them for their accomplishments. This is the time when they learn to share and take turns.

Game One: Going on a Trip

The first child says, “I am going on a trip and I am taking an (child inserts an item that begins with the letter A).”  The next child says, “I am going on a trip and I am taking an (inserts the A item) and a (child inserts an item that begins with the letter B).”  The third child says, “I am going on a trip and I am taking an (inserts the name of the A item), a (inserts the name of the B item), and a (child inserts an item that begins with the letter C).”  This pattern continues around the room until the group of children has exhausted the entire alphabet.

Game Two: I Spy

One child stands and silently chooses an object they can see in the room.  The child then whispers the name of the object in the teacher’s ear, so the teacher can assist in the game as needed.  The child then declares, “I spy something that is (the color of the item).”  The rest of the children then take turns guessing what the object is until the class has identified the item the child was spying.  Whoever guesses the item correctly gets to choose the item for the next round.

Game Three: Four Corners

The teacher assigns a number to each corner of the room, so there is corner number one, corner number two, etc.  The children divide up and stand at a chosen corner.  One child is chosen to be “it” and stands in the center of the room with their eyes closed.  When “it” yells, “Go!” the other children proceed to walk about the perimeter of the room moving from corner to corner.  When “it” yells, “Stop!” the children must go to the nearest corner and wait.  While keeping their eyes closed the child in the center of the room will call out one corner number.  The children standing in that corner are then out of the game for that round.  This procedure continues until there is only one child remaining.  That child will then become the next “it” and play continues with another round.

Game Four: Heads Up 7 Up

Seven children are chosen to stand in at the front of the room.  The rest of the children close their eyes and lower their heads with one thumb held up in the air.  Next, the seven children silently walk about the room looking for someone to choose.  They each choose one seated child by touching their raised thumb.  When a child’s thumb has been touched they will lower their hand into their lap.  After all seven children have made a choice, the children return to stand at the front of the room.  The teacher calls out, “Heads up, seven up!”  The children whose thumbs’ got touched stand up and make a guess at who from the front of the room picked them.  If their guess is correct, they will switch places with the child in the front of the room.  If their guess is incorrect, they will sit back down.  Play continues like this for as many rounds as you desire.

Game Five: Simon Says

One child or the teacher is Simon.  Simon yells out a command such as, “Simon says, march in place!”  The students would then follow the command because “Simon says” to do it.  If Simon does not use the phrase “Simon says” before stating the command and a child still follows, then that child will be seated and is out of the game until the end of the round.  Play continues with eliminations until one child remains who will become the next Simon.

Game Six: Telephone

The children make a line across the room.  You can use one line or the children can form several lines, which could make for a more entertaining game.  The teacher thinks of a phrase and whispers it in the ear of the first child in line.  That child then turns and whispers the phrase to the next child.  This chain of whispers continues down the line until it reaches the last child.  The last child says the phrase out loud to hear how much the phrase changed as it traveled down the telephone line.  The last child in line then moves to the front of the line and the next round begins.

Learning Objectives: After this lesson, children will demonstrate understanding of Parable of the Good Samaritan, by giving personal examples of how they could love their neighbors.

Target Age: Kindergarten – 5^th

Teaching Setting: This lesson was first taught in our broadly graded children’s church on Sunday morning to about 35 children. Our kids begin in the sanctuary with their families and are dismissed to children’s church before the pastor’s sermon. Before the lesson the children participate in several songs and group Bible memory exercises. I aim for no longer than 15-25 minutes with each lesson plan depending on learning activities.

Items Needed:

• Marked Bible for this passage. Prepare the copy in advance by highlighting the significant points to emphasize. Underlining words or ideas that will need additional explanation. I typically make small notes in the margin.
• If you prefer, you can use visual aids to help tell the story.
• A marker board or piece of paper displaying the word “love” large enough for the class to see.

Explanation: This text begins with Jesus’ conversation with a Jewish teacher of the Law. After Jesus taught the great commandments, the man was trying to justify himself. His questions were aimed to lower the ethic bar Jesus had presented him.

So, the Great Teacher tells a story to make the point stick. This is a wonderful story for creative expression. It speaks to our prejudice and hard hearts toward suffering. In the context, Jesus is showing the Kingdom of God consists in action – not just talk.

This is a great story to use creative teaching methods. Have fun!

The Parable of the Good Samaritan – Love Your Neighbors
Luke 10:25 – 37

Hook

Write the word “love” on the board (or a piece of paper to display). Ask the children to close their eyes and imagine someone they love. Then, take volunteer answers. Try to restate the children’s answers into statements about who we should love.

• If a child says “mom” … you say “Good answer, we should love our moms – God wants us to love our moms.
• If a child says “friends” … you say “Good answer, we should love our friends – God wants us to love our friends.

Say: These are all good answers, but today we are going to learn that God wants us to love everyone in our lives. Even people that we normally wouldn’t like!

Active Listening: In the story we are going to read from the Bible, Jesus tells a man what it really means to love your neighbor. In that story there are three characters. Listen carefully to see which person really showed love.

Read (and summarize) Luke 10:25-37. Be sure to engage the children with good story telling. Characters the children are listening for:

1. Priest
2. Levite
3. Samaritan

Another Way To Say: Jesus said that we should love our neighbors as ourselves. Have volunteers suggest another way to say the same thing with different words.

Look/Took:

Agree or Disagree: Tell the children that you are going to read some statements that might be ways to love your neighbor. Ask them to stand if they agree. If they disagree they should sit down with arms crossed. Relate each example back to the idea of loving your neighbor.

1. We don’t need to help people if we are watching our favorite TV show.
2. We should be extra nice to kids at school who have trouble making friends.
3. We should obey our parents right away.

Act It Out: Ask for volunteers to act out the story. For variation, assign several older students as ‘project leaders’ to coach a group of younger students to act out the parable.

Test: Ask for volunteers to suggest ways they can show love to people in their lives.

Prayer: Lead the children in a time of prayer.
